Melbourne is Australia's undisputed sporting capital. From the hallowed turf of the MCG to the electric courts of the Australian Open, sport is woven into the city's DNA.
AFL (Australian Football League)
AFL is religion in Melbourne. The city has 9 of the 18 AFL clubs — more than any other city. The season runs from March to September, with finals in September and the Grand Final at the MCG on the last Saturday of September.
- MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground): 100,000 seats, the spiritual home of footy. Hosts the Grand Final, Anzac Day blockbuster (Collingwood v Essendon), and Dreamtime at the 'G (Richmond v Essendon).
- Marvel Stadium: Docklands, retractable roof. Home to Western Bulldogs, St Kilda, Essendon, North Melbourne, and Carlton.
- Victoria Park: Abbotsford — Collingwood's traditional home ground (now VFL).
- Kardinia Park (GMHBA Stadium): Geelong — 90 min drive, the Cats' fortress.
Melbourne's AFL Clubs: Collingwood Magpies, Richmond Tigers, Essendon Bombers, Carlton Blues, Melbourne Demons, St Kilda Saints, Western Bulldogs, North Melbourne Kangaroos, Hawthorn Hawks (based at Waverley Park).
Australian Open (Tennis)
The first Grand Slam of the tennis calendar is held annually in January at Melbourne Park (adjacent to the MCG). Rod Laver Arena, Margaret Court Arena, and John Cain Arena host two weeks of world-class tennis. Ground passes start at ~$50 for early rounds. The atmosphere is electric — expect 35°C+ days and night sessions under the roof.
Melbourne Cup (Horse Racing)
"The race that stops a nation" — the first Tuesday of November at Flemington Racecourse. The 3,200-metre handicap race is Australia's most famous horse race. It's a public holiday in Victoria. Fashions on the Field, champagne, and a festive atmosphere. The Spring Racing Carnival also includes Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate (Moonee Valley).
Australian Grand Prix (Formula 1)
Held at Albert Park Grand Prix Circuit in March. The 5.2 km street circuit runs around Albert Park Lake. A massive event — 4-day attendance exceeds 400,000. General admission from ~$100/day, grandstands from ~$300.

- Boxing Day Test: MCG — Australia v the touring nation, 26–30 December. A Melbourne tradition.
- A-Leagues (Soccer): Melbourne Victory, Melbourne City, and Western United all play in the city. Victory games at AAMI Park draw big crowds.
- NRL (Rugby League): Melbourne Storm play at AAMI Park. Multiple premiership-winning team.
- Super Rugby (Rugby Union): Melbourne Rebels.
- Netball: Melbourne Vixens (Super Netball), Collingwood Magpies Netball.
- Big Bash League (Cricket): Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades at MCG and Marvel.
Playing Sport Yourself
Must Do Melbourne and Melbourne Rec Centres list amateur and social sport leagues. Pick-up soccer at Fawkner Park, running clubs (Melbourne Marathon in October), park run every Saturday, and cycling groups everywhere. The Melbourne Sports & Aquatic Centre in Albert Park has pools, gyms, and courts.

The Sporting Calendar
Melbourne’s sporting year is a relay race of global events. January: the Australian Open at Melbourne Park. March: the F1 Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park. March–September: the AFL season, with the Grand Final at the MCG on the last Saturday of September — 100,000 people in the stands. November: the Melbourne Cup at Flemington — a public holiday in Victoria. And year-round: the Big Bash cricket, A-League football, the NRL’s Melbourne Storm, and international fixtures at the MCG and Marvel Stadium.

Tickets and Getting There
The practicalities: AFL memberships sell out years ahead at some clubs, but general admission tickets are available for most games from $25–$40 — buy through Ticketek or the clubs. The Australian Open ground passes start around $50 for early rounds. The Grand Prix is the priciest ticket of the year — book early for the cheapest categories. All the major venues are on the rail and tram network: Jolimont and Richmond stations for the MCG, Flinders Street for Marvel, and the tram to Albert Park.
The local experience: arrive early, eat at the ground (the MCG’s pies are a rite of passage), and know that the real atmosphere is in the outer — the standing-room bays where the songs start.
Sport for Everyone
Melbourne is also Australia’s most participatory sporting city: park runs, community ovals, the bay trails for cycling and running, and a netball, basketball, and cricket participation boom. The council-run pools and gyms are excellent value, and the city’s running events — the Melbourne Marathon in October, the Sun Run, the Colour Run — fill fast. Whatever your sport, Melbourne has a club, a league, and a community waiting.
