Planning — the Practicalities
Melbourne is the base for some of Australia’s most spectacular day trips: the Great Ocean Road, the Yarra Valley, the Mornington Peninsula, Phillip Island, and the Dandenong Ranges are all within two hours. The planning factors are season and crowds. The Great Ocean Road is best in autumn and spring — summer is crowded and the coastal towns book out. The Yarra Valley is beautiful year-round with harvest in autumn. Phillip Island’s penguin parade runs nightly, with the best viewing in winter when the penguins come in early.
Most trips need a car, but trains reach the Dandenongs (Belgrave), Mornington Peninsula (Frankston plus bus), and Geelong for the start of the Great Ocean Road. Organised tours from the CBD run $100–$160 per person and solve the logistics.
The Classic Itineraries
Great Ocean Road day: leave by 7am, Bells Beach and Torquay, Lorne for lunch, Twelve Apostles and Loch Ard Gorge, return inland via the Princes Highway. Yarra Valley day: two wineries before lunch, long lunch, Healesville Sanctuary or the chocolate factory on the way home. Mornington Peninsula day: Peninsula Hot Springs in the morning, cellar doors at Red Hill, lunch in Sorrento, beach swim. Phillip Island day: Churchill Island heritage farm, the Nobbies boardwalk, the penguin parade at dusk. Dandenongs day: Puffing Billy steam train, SkyHigh Mount Dandenong views, lunch in Olinda.
Each runs $80–$150 per person all-in. The money-savers: picnic supplies from Queen Victoria Market, share tastings, and book the penguin parade and hot springs online in advance.
